Probiotics for Dogs: What They Are & What to Look For

Probiotics are common in dog supplements, but labels can be difficult to compare. Understanding probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics is a useful starting point.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms used in appropriate amounts in products intended to support the gut microbial community. Products can contain different organisms, strains and quantities.

Probiotics vs prebiotics

Prebiotics are substrates used by microorganisms in the gut rather than live bacteria. A product can contain probiotics, prebiotics or both.

What are postbiotics?

Postbiotics are preparations derived from microorganisms and their components rather than live probiotic organisms.

What should you look for?

  • Identification of organisms or strains where provided
  • A stated viable count where relevant
  • Storage instructions
  • Clear feeding directions
  • Other ingredients such as fibres or flavourings

Do probiotics fix digestive problems?

Digestive signs have many causes. Persistent diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, blood in the stool, weight loss, pain or lethargy require veterinary assessment.
